Are Custom Orthotics Right for You?

Foot pain isn’t always just a problem with your feet. The way your foot and ankle move can influence forces throughout the lower limb, including the knees, hips and back. A custom orthotics assessment can help identify how your foot structure, movement patterns, footwear and activity may be contributing to your symptoms.

Orthotics aren’t necessary for every foot problem. Our first step is determining what is contributing to your symptoms and whether an orthotic is an appropriate part of your treatment plan.

Custom Orthotics FAQs

How do I know if I need custom orthotics?

The best way to determine whether custom orthotics are appropriate is through an assessment. Foot pain can have many causes, and orthotics aren't necessary for every condition. Your clinician will assess your symptoms, mechanics, footwear and activity before making a recommendation.

Over-the-counter insoles are manufactured in standard sizes and shapes. Custom orthotics are designed following an individual assessment and can incorporate specific features based on your foot structure, symptoms and functional requirements.

Orthotics may be one component of treatment for some people experiencing plantar heel pain or plantar fasciitis. Recommendations depend on the factors contributing to your symptoms and may also include footwear changes, exercises and activity modification.

In some cases, foot mechanics can influence forces affecting the knee. An assessment can help determine whether footwear, orthotics or another treatment approach may be appropriate.

Can I wear custom orthotics while running or playing sports?

Yes. Orthotics can be designed with specific footwear and activities in mind. We recommend bringing the shoes you commonly use for your sport or activity to your assessment.

Most people introduce new orthotics gradually. Your clinician will provide instructions based on your orthotics and individual needs.

Requirements can vary depending on your situation and insurance plan. If you are seeking reimbursement through extended health insurance, check your insurer's requirements before purchasing your orthotics.

The lifespan of an orthotic varies depending on its materials, activity level, footwear, frequency of use and individual needs. Orthotics can be reassessed over time to determine whether adjustment, refurbishment or replacement is appropriate.
