Living with Osteoarthritis.

Arthritis & Injury Care Centre is proud to be a sponsor of the Atlantic Arthritis School Association, a non-profit organization in Nova Scotia.

The Atlantic Arthritis School Association (Arthritis School) is a public service whose mission is to deliver information and education on Osteoarthritis.

What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common kind of arthritis, affecting more than three million Canadians.  OA occurs when the articular cartilage (the soft cartilage covering the ends of the knee bones) begins to wear away.  The cartilage is an essential part of the joint as it acts as a shock absorber and helps the joint move smoothly.

When OA occurs the cartilage erodes, and depending on the progression of the disease, can result in pain, stiffness, and swelling. In severe cases when the cartilage has worn away entirely it can cause the bones to rub together (bone-on-bone movement) and the joints become more painful.

OA is a condition that affects our aging population with disabling pain that can reduce someones quality of live and restrict daily activities.  One of the areas of the body most commonly affected is the knee.
