Bracing & Compression
Whether you’re waiting for surgery or actively recovering, the right brace will help as you get back to your normal level of activity or competition as fast as possible.
At Arthritis and Injury Care, we have a large variety of knee braces to help rehabilitate and care for many different knee conditions. Among some of the most common conditions for knee braces are osteoarthritis, ligament strains (ACL, MCL, LCL, & PCL), patellofemoral syndrome, and meniscal injuries. Depending on your condition, symptoms, and needs, our braces can be used to offload the joint (or reduce stress on the joint), provide stability and support, help align the patella, and/or provide compression. All of our braces contain rigid material.
A back brace can be very beneficial in maintaining daily function and can be used to help with the management of both chronic and acute conditions. Most back braces will apply compression around the abdominal cavity to increase intra-abdominal pressure. This increase in pressure provides support and stabilization to the spine and surrounding muscles. Some of our back braces also have a rigid plate for spinal stability. A large portion of our back bracing is for conditions of the lower spine and SI joint, although we do have options for the upper back and neck as well.
Hip bracing is generally used to control the range of motion of the hip joint during rehabilitation of an acute injury or post-operatively. Other types of hip bracing can promote external rotation and abduction of the hip to help with pain, resulting from impingement or osteoarthritis. Alternatively, compression shorts can provide stability to the hip joints and reduce inflammation.
At Arthritis & Injury Care Centre, we have many braces related to foot and ankle rehabilitation. Bootwalkers make up the majority of foot-related bracing. We use boot walkers for many different rehab situations in order to immobilize the joints of the foot and ankle while still allowing semi or full weight-bearing gait.
These situations can involve:
- Fractures of the bones of the feet
- Surgical interventions like joint replacements or joint fusions
- Soft tissue rupture or injury
We also have foot braces for conditions like:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Achilles tendinitis
- Bunion pain
- And more…
A large portion of ankle braces are designed to support the outside of the ankle. The ankle is most susceptible to injury on this side, and we often see ligament sprains and tendon strains due to the injury. At the Arthritis & Injury Care Centre we have many different ankle braces with varying levels of support; depending on the type and severity of the injury. We also have many different styles of compression ankle braces that are designed to help with swelling and inflammation of the ankle post-injury.
Most shoulder braces fit into one of two broad categories; immobilization or functional.
At the Arthritis & Injury Care Centre, we have many different types of shoulder immobilizers or slings. These are usually meant for after an acute injury or surgery.
The other type of shoulder brace, functional, is usually meant for during activity in order to limit the range of motion of the shoulder by providing a compressive and restricting force. This is accomplished by the material used in the brace, and sometimes an additional strapping technique around the shoulder joint.
The majority of elbow braces we offer are for chronic injuries, such as tendonitis. There are different versions of this brace to provide different support and comfort to the elbow, such as compression. We also offer braces that restrict or limit the range of motion to the elbow to prevent specific movements to protect from further damage or injury.
Many of our hand and wrist braces are designed to immobilize the affected joint. Wrist braces typically have metal or hard plastic stays throughout the braces in different areas depending on the support required. The thumb is the most common part of the hand to require bracing. There are wrist braces that serve dual functions: 1) wrist support and 2) thumb support. We also bracing/splinting for fingers for conditions such as OA and trigger finger.
Graduated Compression Socks or Stockings (socks which are strongest at the ankle and decrease in compression as they go up the leg) help to return blood to the heart, decrease venous pressure, prevent blood pooling, and the deterioration of the vein walls. They also effectively relieve aching and heavy legs by helping the body in moving blood up the leg against the pull of gravity.
At the Arthritis & Injury Care Centre our Certified Brace Specialists will take the time to review your injury/condition and help to educate you on the benefits of Compression Socks or Stockings. During your one-on-one no obligation appointment we will take the time to size you correctly and to assess your needs.
Compression Socks or Stockings come in various sizes to accommodate all sizes and lengths of legs.
There are a number of reasons as to why your doctor or healthcare provider may suggest Compression Socks or Stockings to you. Here are a few of the more common reasons:
– Swelling or Edema of the ankles and/or legs
– Achy or Heavy Legs
– Post-surgically to prevent potentially life-threatening blood clots from developing
– Poor circulation
– Varicose veins

At the Arthritis & Injury Care Centre, custom orthotics for the foot and/or feet are part of a therapeutic process.
This is the result of an assessment from a Certified Pedorthist or Podiatrist that includes a biomechanical and gait analysis, proper foot joint range of motion testing, soft tissue/muscle testing, as well as a number of additional testing based on your individual injury/condition. After this assessment, a three-dimensional mold of your feet (or foot) will be taken for the custom foot orthotics and the Certified Pedorthist or Podiatrist will discuss and educate you on the best approach for solving your injury/condition.
We take pride in your recovery and progress and will work with you through this entire process. Additional follow up sessions can be made to check on your progress with the orthotics, and any other treatment protocol that may be suggested.
The added benefit of choosing the Arthritis & Injury Care Centre for custom orthotics treatment is our inter-professional approach. Our Certified Pedorthists and Podiatrist work closely alongside Brace Specialists, Physiotherapists, Massage Therapists, and other medical professionals to offer all our patients the best care possible. You can purchase custom orthotics at our Halifax, Dartmouth, and Saint John locations.
