Arthritis & Injury Care Centre is committed to working with out patients during their entire Journey to Recovery. To demonstrate this, we asked one of our patients if they would be willing to share their experience. This is Wayne’s story.
PATIENT HISTORY:
Wayne turned 60-years old in March 2020. He has been married for 40 years and has one daughter. He has worked in retail for the past 39 years, 20 years with Sears and the last 9 with Sportchek on the Management team, which means he is active in all aspects of the business. His job requires a lot of moving around so he is on his feet most of the day. Wayne enjoys what he does but is looking forward to retirement in 2021! He has always been active with golf being a favorite pastime. He has been a member at Ashburn Golf Club in Halifax, Nova Scotia for over 40 years. He and his wife love to walk, bike, and swim.
Wayne has suffered from Tendonities in his left foot for the past ten years. A recent MRI also showed bone spurs on his left heel which has been contributing to the pain.
INJURY:
In November 2020, Wayne ruptured his left Achilles Tendon. He was on a 5-foot ladder, coming down empty handed and missed the second last wrung. He lost his balance and start to fall, twisting his body to avoid landing on pallets next to the ladder. Hi came down on his left foot with all his weight causing the Achilles Tendon to rupture. Wayne immediately knew that something was wrong but he continued to work for another hour before he decided he needed to seek medical attention.
TREATMENT PROCESS:
Wayne went to Cobequid Emergency Department the night of the injury around 8pm and was instructed to return in the morning. When he went back the next morning, he had an Xray to determine he did not have any broken bones and was sent to the Halifax Emergency Department for a cast to immobilize his foot in proper position. Within a week he was scheduled for an MRI and to see an Orthopaedic Surgeon. The MRI results confirmed a ruptured Achilles Tendon and he was immediately instructed to begin his rehabilitation process.
After Wayne’s appointment with the Orthopaecis Surgeon, he came to Arthritis & Injury Care Centre to see Orthopaedic Bracing Specialist Emily Ingraham and was fitted for a Breg Achilles Bootwalker as well as for a pair of Compression Stockings which were able to manage my swelling which he now continues to wear as a compression style protective sock when he is out walking. These items were covered under Wayne’s Workers Compensation claim as his injury took place at his workplace and we were able to bill directly for Wayne so he did not have any out of pocket expenses.
Wayne also began Physiotherapy with Physiotherapist Matthew Ward at Citadel Physiotherapy, which are located in the same space as Arthritis & Injury Care Centre in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
